The new Fiat 500e features an all-electric drivetrain, with a 111 hp (83 kW) motor fed by a battery pack that can be charged in less than 4 hours via its 240V on-board charging module (OBCM).
The city driving range is over 100 miles, while the energy efficiency is 116 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) city and 100 MPGe highway.
The chassis and suspension were re-designed for the EV powertrain, and careful attention was paid to the aerodynamic efficiency, with more than 140 hours of wind tunnel testing and refinement.
This resulted in a 13 percent improvement in the Cd coefficient (0.311 compared to the Fiat 500 Lounge’s 0.359), which allowed to achieve an additional five miles of range.
The maintains the model’s retro-futuristic style, based on the values of simplicity and fun-to-drive.
Among the new elements are the distinctive front and rear lower dot-matrix patterned fascias, while the other aerodynamic improvements include the streamlined exterior mirror caps, the 15-inch aluminum wheels with flush profile, new side sills and under vehicle bellypans.
The look can be customized by combining the body colors – including the Electrico Arancione Perla (Electric Orange Tri-coat paint) – with contrasting white or black fascias.
Inside, the environment is available in Nero (black) or exclusive Steam (white), highlighted by Electric Orange.
The new 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) instrument cluster displays full-color picture graphics to illustrate vehicle functions, charge levels and trip summary.
A new TomTom Navigation unit enables the driver to view the vehicle’s charge schedule, range, and power-flow gauges, and can even request nearby charging stations with real-time availability.
Below its instrument panel bezel, the new electronic shifter with easy-to-use push-button transmission mode selection.
A Fiat 500e Smartphone App (compatible with iPhone and Android) enables real-time vehicle status, manages charging, tracks the driver’s energy use, locates the vehicle and nearby charging stations, plans and sends routes to the vehicle and provides text-message alerts.
The all-new 2013 Fiat 500e will be sold in California from the second quarter of 2013.
